Power Plant Security Solutions
Power plants vary greatly in their size, layout, and management structure based on the type of product they offer. DMT has low-cost, yet extremely capable security solutions for all of these facilities. Many power generation or distribution sites are located along water, which is used often as a coolant. Waterside environments are tough for many security radar providers. Many radar companies use Ku-Band frequencies, which is great for providing high resolution imaging. But those frequencies have extremely poor performance in foul weather. Fog, rain, and snow greatly reduce the range and can generate many false alarms. X-Band radar offers great all-weather performance and is why it is used in marine navigation radars. All DMT radar systems use this band.
Some power distribution facilities are located in urban environments. These facilities may not have large grounds around them. In these cases, a radar with fast revisit rates is required. The MDR (Motion Detection Radar) can be placed on perimeters, corners, and even between rows or outdoor corridors. This radar updates many times a second, so no intruder is fast enough to cross these areas between updates.
Some power generation facilities, like nuclear power plants, have large open areas around them. In this case, a fast-scanning radar to cover these large areas is required. Most times the IDAR can meet all these requirements. If you need more range, however, the XRDS can cover even larger areas.
Should I use a Doppler radar or not? DMT is known for its Doppler radar solutions. Doppler radars fire many pulses at objects for two purposes (1) to provide a higher amount of long-term power on the object (which increases ranges), and (2) it measures minute speed variations from objects. Speed variations allow Doppler radar to differentiate real intruders from stationary objects or other moving objects. Since Doppler radars send many pulses instead of one, it cannot rotate as fast as a non-Doppler radar systems. However, DMT processing algorithms are fast and the radars has revisit rates of a few seconds.
Doppler radar is essential for removing clutter (water motion, blowing grasses, etc). If your application requires both land and water like many power plant applications do, then Doppler radar is the choice for you. DMT’s IDAR, MDR and XRDS are Doppler radars. And DMT’s tracking and advance algorithms give great performance for all power plant solution requirements.
DMT recommends thermal camera solutions for waterside security needs. Thermal cameras can penetrate fog and many types of weather. DMT does just provide the camera, it integrates the camera seamlessly with the radar. Solid-state power and integrated cables complete the package.
Some power generation facilities, however, have plenty of lighting on the facility. In this case, DMT can provide simple security dome cameras at a quarter of the price of most thermal cameras. Plus, DMT can also provide additional lighting if that is needed in out-of-the-way areas on the facility.
DMT’s security bundle approach takes the guess work out of selecting the right package for you. The IDAR or MDR security bundles works best for most power plant sites. Dorado can also be used at some of the sites. These solutions are priced the same. Need longer ranges? Go to the XRDS or the Dorado Model 24B security bundles. Most power generation and refineries get by with 2 or 3 of these bundles. Larger facilities may require a few more.
Monitoring is easy. DMT provides many simple and easy-to-use options for monitoring on the local security network or to remote sites. Tablet PC’s, like Apple iPads and Microsoft Surface, can allow operators to even monitor from home or from any site on the facility.
